Political Employee Job Description We received what appears to be a job announcement from WEA seeking to hire a political programs coordinator full-time, for at least $5,742 per month plus benefits, to (1) develop a statewide political program that includes federal, state, legislative and school board races, (2) implement strategies around ballot initiatives, (3) train paid staff for political action in targeted electoral races, and (4) manage a voter file.

Judge Tabor Decision Thurston County Superior Court Judge Gary Tabor issued a "guilty" verdict against the Washington Education Association (WEA) for what he characterized as intentional violations in the union's use of mandatory teacher dues and fees for politics.

$45,200 from COP to democrat party
$40,000 Seibert "directed" transfer from WEA-PAC to COP
$500 from COP to "Yes 43"
$3,000 from COP to "Privacy Fund Political Committee"
$5,000 from COP to "No 48" (property rights)
$63,018 claimed value of WEA-PAC overhead for Jan through October 1996.
$700 excessive contribution to six legislative candidates
$410,000 received and then forwarded to No 173/177 campaign from NEA.
$272,702 contribution to No 173/177 not reported in a timely fashion.
$319,000 to be returned to teachers:
($162,225 "loan", $142,929 overhead, and $13,850)
$325,000 total if 65,000 WEA members received $5.
$80,000 penalty
$20,000 costs for the state.

Note: the AG paid a $33,000 penalty for attempting to conceal this document) Rather than prosecute the WEA for the illegally assessing all WEA members to fund election activities, WEA prevailed upon the state to settle. WEA was allowed to write their own settlement, a fact evident by comparing this first draft with the final version).

WEA threat letter (Source: Jeff Leer) WEA general counsel wrote to Jeff Leer threatening to sue him for daring to ask the district to stop withholding the "Community Outreach Program" assessment. At the time of Mr. Leer's request, the state Attorney General had filed a lawsuit against WEA for the illegal assessment of these funds for political purposes without consent.
